AIM Pro Bone™ Detail
Bone health: According to the Osteoporosis Canada organization,
25% of women – that’s one woman in four – over the age of 50 suffer
from osteoporosis.
Half as many Canadian men also have this disease. Health Canada
recommends the same amount of dietary calcium for both men and
women: 1000-1300 mg daily. Ideally, this will come from food
sources, but a low-dose supplement (taken throughout the day) can be
an effective way to boost calcium intake. Children and teenagers
require calcium to accommodate their growing skeletal systems, so
careful food choices and supplementation are wise. Osteoporosis or
its precursor, osteopenia, can develop at any age, but taking
preventative measures goes a long way to maintaining strong, healthy
bones throughout life.
In addition to the benefits of calcium for bone integrity,
several studies in the past few years have linked high calcium diets
to weight loss. The increasing rate of obesity and associated
conditions in North America is a clear sign that extra weight is a
serious health risk factor to be addressed.
Calcium is an electrolyte required for proper functioning of
muscles and nerves. The heart being a muscle, and the brain being
directly connected to the nerves, the body’s need for calcium is
even more urgent than one might think. As you can see, calcium is
required for more than just bone health.
AIM Pro Bone™ is a carefully formulated calcium supplement with
additional nutrients and ingredients that have been shown to support
the strength of the bones. Llysine, vitamin D3, and citric and malic
acids offer benefits above and beyond bone health. Bone health is
dependent on a constant supply of many nutrients…vitamin D3,
L-lysine, vitamin K, boron, magnesium, folic acid, vitamin B6 & B12,
etc. A deficiency of any one of these nutrients can negatively
impact bone health. Magnesium has been omitted in this formula as it
is known that it can hinder the uptake of calcium. In other words,
these two minerals compete with each other for absorption. This
formula has a delicious natural orange flavour, and is in an easily
absorbable powder form.
Action of Ingredients
(content in one heaping scoop):
Medicinal ingredients:
- Calcium (375 mg) citrate / malate: Many calcium supplements
are made from calcium carbonate, a poorly absorbed form of
calcium from limestone. However, the human body is not designed
to absorb rocks, and carbonate therefore requires an efficient
digestive system. When calcium is bonded with citric and malic
acids, it forms calcium citrate and malate. These forms can be
easily ionized, absorbed and utilized, even by people with weak
digestion. Greater bioavailability means that the body can make
use of the mineral rather than excreting it or resulting in
constipation as many people find with inexpensive calcium
supplements. The low dose of Pro Bone™ (375 mg, as opposed to a
1000 mg dose) further enhances the efficiency of this calcium
supplement. The relatively low dose of calcium in Pro Bone™ is
optimal because the body is not designed to absorb a large dose
of any vitamin or mineral at one time. For this reason, if
taking more than one serving of Pro Bone™ daily, it is best to
take them several hours apart.
- L-lysine (300 mg) hydrochloride: Amino acids (the building
blocks of protein) are foundational in the formation of
collagen, bone and connective tissue. L-lysine is an essential
amino acid: the body cannot make it and must therefore get it
through diet or supplementation. L-lysine supplements are often
taken for cold sores and healthy immunity, but this amino acid
is also widely recognized for its ability to enhance the
absorption of calcium into the bloodstream and to prevent its
excretion. In addition, the body needs L-lysine for growth and
tissue repair, and it is directly involved in the production of
L-carnitine (a non-essential amino acid), which assists in the
proper utilization of fats.
- Vitamin D3 (100 IU) from cholecalciferol:
Cholecalciferol is the naturally occurring form of vitamin D3.
Whereas other supplements offer ingredients that the body must
convert or may contain synthetic vitamin D, the cholecalciferol
molecule is true vitamin D3, preformed and ready for the body to
utilize. It has been estimated that more than a billion people
worldwide are vitamin D deficient. Vitamin D3 helps in the
absorption and use of not only calcium but also phosphorus,
another crucial element for the strength of the bone matrix.
According to the Vitamin D Council (a non-profit educational
corporation led by physicians), maintaining adequate levels of
vitamin D has been linked with a decreased risk of several
degenerative conditions such as:
diabetes, autoimmune disorders (e.g., lupus, psoriasis),
osteoarthritis, arteriosclerosis, various types of cancer,
mental illness, multiple sclerosis, muscular weakness, and even
chronic low back pain. Findings presented at the recent
International Vitamin D Conference in Victoria, British Columbia
(May 2006) reaffirmed these medical opinions and indicated that
vitamin D may have important antibiotic potential by stimulating
production of the body’s own natural antibiotic substances.
Non-medicinal ingredients:
- Orange natural flavours: AIM Pro Bone™ contains only natural
flavouring agents.
- Stevia extract: AIM Pro Bone™ is sweetened with an extract
of stevia, a herb that is much sweeter than sugar without
affecting blood sugar levels or contributing to adrenal
exhaustion. Sugar consumption causes the body to extract calcium
(an alkaline mineral) from the bones in order to buffer sugar’s
acidifying effect. Stevia does not have this effect, so it
presents no danger to existing bone mass.
- Citric acid: A naturally occurring acid that contributes to
increased calcium absorption. Citric acid is involved in the
Krebs cycle, which is how energy is produced at the cellular
level.
- Malic acid: Known mostly for its beneficial effect on
fibromyalgia, malic acid is an alpha-hydroxy or fruit acid,
usually derived from apples. Malic acid also aids in the
absorption of calcium and participates in the Krebs cycle.
- Beta-carotene: Also known as pro-vitamin A because the body
converts this antioxidant into vitamin A. This is included in
Pro Bone™ to contribute a natural orange colour.
Recommended use:
AIM Pro Bone™ is intended to support lifetime health of the
bones and teeth.
Taking two heaping scoops of Pro Bone™ daily ensures an ample
calcium supply in the bloodstream for maintenance and repair tasks.
If serum calcium levels are low, this mineral will be pulled from
the bones; this demineralization, or bone resorption, weakens the
bone structure and diminishes bone density. By enhancing phosphorus
and calcium absorption and retention, Pro Bone™ may help prevent
osteoporosis and permit strong, healthy bones from childhood through
the senior years.
Recommended dose:
Adults and children over 12 years may take one heaping scoop
(3.16 g) up to twice daily. Mix Pro Bone™ with cold water or juice,
or add it to your daily serving of BarleyLife®.
Cautions: Avoid using 2 hours prior to or until 4 hours after taking
other medications.
